Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Commander Wayne Jordan graduated with a degree in engineering from Purdue University in June 1935. After graduation Jordan entered the United States Navy as an Aviation Cadet and received his commission as an Ensign in December 1936 at Pensacola Naval Air Station. After earning his wings Jordan was assigned to duty with the Pacific Fleet onboard the Battleship USS Colorado. From the Colorado he flew the Vought OS2U Kingfisher.

In July 1937 the cruise of the Colorado was interrupted with the Search for Amelia Earhart, who along with her and navigator Frederick Noonan that was last heard from on July 2nd. Ensign Jordan was in the very first group, one of six pilots, that flew missions off of the Colorado in search of the Earhart and Noonan.

This grouping includes various reports on the search including an original copy of the Honolulu Star Bulletin dated August 21, 1937. Jordan's photo appears on the front page feature story along with the other five aviators involved in the search. The feature story written by journalist John B. Terry provides a riveting account of the search from the Colorado. The disappearance was arguably one of the most important events in "between the wars aviation" and Wayne Jordan was there on the front lines of the search.

Early during World War II, Lt. Commander Wayne Jordan served as a Pilot in the Naval Air Transport service and later as an Instructor Pilot at the Bunker Hill Naval Air Station. Jordan would later see combat duty onboard the USS Mount Olympus in the Third Amphibious Force of the Pacific Fleet in 1944 and 1945 as Assistant Operations Officer directing carrier based strikes during the Battle of Leyte Gulf and later the Battle of Luzon for which he was awarded the Philippines ribbon with Battle Star.

Commander Jordan would leave active duty in 1945 but remain in the reserves. Wayne Jordan passed away in March 1994.
